In 1951, McCourt was drafted into the Korean War and sent to Bavaria for two years initially training dogs, then working as a clerk. Upon discharge, he returned to New York City, where he held a series of jobs on docks, in warehouses, and in banks.
Before buying the Los Angeles Dodgers, McCourt made a bid to buy the Boston Red Sox planning to build a new stadium on the land he owned and used for parking lots on the South Boston waterfront. Personal life
He married his third wife, Ellen Frey McCourt, on August 13, 1994, in Milford, Pennsylvania, five years after meeting at the Lion's Head bar in New York City. After the success of his memoir, they lived in New York City and Roxbury, Connecticut. He met Ellen in December 1989, when she was 35 and he was 59, retired from teaching high school. His brother Malachy described the first two marriages as difficult, and praised his brother's third wife Ellen as a woman who cherished his brother Frank, helping him to open up his creative side and write his books.

The school is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on West 84th Street. The Frank McCourt School is one of four small schools designated to fill the campus of the former Louis D. Brandeis High School. The first principal of the school is Danielle Salzberg, who previously served as acting principal at Khalil Gibran International Academy and as an assistant principal at Millennium High School in New York.
An international effort
Unfinished Labs’ first project — the introduction of the open source Decentralized Social Networking Protocol — became the foundation of Project Liberty, an initiative that seeks to accelerate the world’s transition to an open, inclusive data economy. Frank McCourt formally announced Project Liberty in Paris in June 2021. The launch of Project Liberty included the announcement of the McCourt Institute, an independent establishment dedicated to researching technology that serves the common good. The two foundational partners of the institute are Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and Sciences Po in Paris. McCourt tapped Jacques-Henri Eyraud, the French entrepreneur, academic, and former head of Olympique de Marseille, to lead the institute. McCourt founded Unfinished, and Unfinished Labs, its research and development arm, in 2020.
McCourt has already committed $150 million of his own money to Project Liberty, and says that ultimately “billions of dollars” will be needed for the effort to effect lasting change. In an interview, he declared his intention to spend 90% of his working time on Project Liberty and 10% on McCourt Global, as opposed to the other way around. “This is a big shift in my focus, but it demonstrates the importance of Project Liberty to me,” he says. It should be optimized for people, not for time online, ad revenue, or rage,” he told TIME in a recent interview. He pointed to the ways foreign powers have used platforms like Facebook and Twitter to spread misinformation and manipulate elections.
Project Liberty has also engaged all sorts of policy experts to think through thorny questions about establishing guardrails and governance structures in this new online world. One of those is the Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, who received funding from Project Liberty for a “Duty of Care” initiative to study harms and identify best practices to deter them. Project Liberty is a visionary initiative to transform how the Internet works, who owns and controls personal data, and who benefits from the digital economy. This is a global problem – one that can’t be solved by regulatory tweaks.
Also, the new ownership pays $14 million to rent the parking lots surrounding Dodger Stadium from an entity half-owned by McCourt. The sale officially closed on May 1, 2012, ending McCourt's turbulent period as Dodgers owner. On October 14, 2009, it was announced the McCourts would be separating after nearly 30 years of marriage. He has claimed that the divorce has "no bearing on the team whatsoever." The Dodgers assets acquired by McCourt included significant real estate assets related to the stadium in Chavez Ravine, including stadium parking lot land. Plans were announced for new real estate developments at Dodger Stadium however those plans never came to fruition. One discussed plan was for an NFL stadium and adjacent retail complex.
